A Guide to Social Security Benefits After a Loss

Losing a loved one brings many responsibilities and questions, including what financial benefits may be available to surviving family members. The Social Security Administration (SSA) provides certain benefits to eligible spouses, children, and other dependents.

Understanding these benefits can help your family take important steps during a difficult time.

What Social Security Benefits Are Available?

Monthly Survivor Benefits

Eligible family members may receive monthly payments based on their loved one's Social Security earnings history. The amount and eligibility depend on several factors, including age, family circumstances, and the deceased person's work history.

One-Time Death Benefit

Social Security may also provide a one-time death payment of $255 to an eligible surviving spouse or child. This benefit is not automatic and must be applied for within two years of the death.

Who May Qualify for Survivor Benefits?

Depending on individual circumstances, benefits may be available to:

  • Surviving spouses age 60 or older, or age 50 or older with a qualifying disability.
  • Surviving spouses caring for an eligible child of the deceased.
  • Surviving divorced spouses who meet certain requirements.
  • Unmarried children under age 18, certain full-time students through age 19, and adult children with qualifying disabilities.
  • Dependent parents age 62 or older.

The Social Security Administration determines eligibility and benefit amounts based on each family's circumstances.

What Should I Do After a Death?

Walker Funeral Home assists families by notifying the Social Security Administration of their loved one's death.

However, surviving family members are responsible for contacting Social Security directly to apply for any benefits they may be eligible to receive.

We encourage families to contact Social Security promptly, as delays in applying may affect the benefits available.
