Vaughn earned his Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Technology from Utah State University in 1974, and his Masters of Aeronautical Science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 1982. Vaughn then went on to attend the United States Air Force Space Operation School in 1983, where he was a distinguished graduate.
