Steven Nelson
Hatch
May 19, 1950 — Oct 13, 2025
Steven Nelson Hatch passed away peacefully at the age of 75 on October 13, 2025, in Springville, UT, after complications from a fall. He was born on May 19, 1950, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Helen Henderson Nelson and William J Hatch.
When he was an infant, his family moved to Spanish Fork, Utah. As a child, he attended Rees Elementary and other Spanish Fork schools, including graduating from the “new” Spanish Fork High School in 1968. As a teenager, he mowed lawns and worked at Town Pride Dairy (feeding pigs behind the dairy, where he learned that pigs can bite). He was an Eagle Scout and helped construct the amphitheater at Maple Dell Boy Scout Camp.
Following high school graduation, he attended Brigham Young University, where he played the clarinet in the BYU Cougar Band. He met Colleen Marie Carter during their freshman year. He loved to buy her ice cream, and they attended BYU football games together. He served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Eastern States Mission from 1969-1971, teaching the gospel in Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey. He and Colleen wrote faithfully during his two-year mission, getting married on August 20, 1971, in the Salt Lake Temple, soon after his return home. They lived in Spanish Fork while they continued their education. He graduated in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science in Therapeutic Recreation and a minor in Youth Leadership.
After college graduation, he worked in Receiving and Stores at Utah Valley Hospital before moving to Central Receiving and Shipping at BYU. Steve was a Certified Claims Professional and was on a national Transportation Arbitration Board. He eventually transferred to Church Purchasing at BYU, retiring in 2012.
Steve and Colleen moved to Salem, Utah, in 1978 and soon welcomed their son, Steven, followed by their daughter, SaraMarie. He enjoyed tending to his yard, collecting coins and Hummel figurines, spending time with his grandchildren, and watching BYU sports. Steve was involved in scouting as a Merit Badge Counselor and a member of many Eagle Boards of Review. He regularly volunteered with Friends of Scouting.
As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Steve served as a Sunday school teacher, high councilor, bishopric member, and, more recently, in the Payson Temple baptistry from its opening in 2015 until 2024. He demonstrated the importance of service to family, friends, and community. Steve and Colleen were recognized for their service as the Grand Marshals of Salem Days in 2024.
He is survived by his loving wife Colleen of Salem, Utah, his children Steven (Kristi) of Tooele, Utah, Sara (Jake) Barber of Spanish Fork, Utah, and eight grandchildren. Additionally, he is survived by his younger siblings, David (DeeAnne) Hatch of Spanish Fork and Rebecca (Mark) Warner of West Jordan, Utah. He was preceded in death by his parents, Colleen’s parents, and his older brother, William Nelson (NorRene) Hatch.
Steve left behind a legacy of faith, compassion, hard work, obedience, and service. We want to thank the staff at Stonehenge in Springville for their loving care over the last two months of his life. We are grateful for the knowledge of eternal families and know we will see him again. A viewing will be held on Friday, October 24, 2025, from 6:00-8:00 PM at Walker Funeral Home, 187 S Main, Spanish Fork. An additional viewing will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2025, from 9:45-10:45 AM at the Salem West Stake Center, 695 S 300 W, Salem, Utah, followed by funeral services at 11:00 AM with the interment at Salem City Cemetery.
