Obituary

Our beloved Sandra Hale Dietlein was born on October 1, 1934 in the LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah.  She was the oldest of Nathan and Ruth Hale’s 7 children and joyfully two of her other siblings cooincidentally shared the same birthday.  She had a happy childhood in her Granger home.  Because she was the daughter of famous actors and playwrights, Nathan and Ruth Hale, she was exposed to the stage at a very young age and went on to become a very accomplished actress.  When she was eight years old in the early 1940’s, she moved with her family to Pasadena, California and later to Glendale, California where her parents would open their first playhouse in 1947 called Glendale Centre Theatre.

Sandy loved her years of schooling in Glendale.  In 1949, when beautiful Sandy Hale turned 15, she caught the eye of a strikingly handsome upperclassman, Allan Dietlein.  Their love story began.  Allan was called to serve a two and a half year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Netherlands.  Sandy wrote him the entire time and patiently waited.  He proposed as soon as he returned and they were soon married in the Salt Lake Temple on September 18, 1953.

Allan joined the military. After the birth of their first child, Shauna, they transferred to a military base in Germany where they made life-long friends.  Upon completing his assignment they moved back to Glendale where they continued their family.  Mark Allan, Melody, Timothy James and David Hale joined Shauna to make their family complete.

In 1959 Allan and Sandra joined in a partnership with Nathan and Ruth Hale to continue to grow the Glendale Centre Theatre.  Their partnership grew the theatre to be the longest continuously running theatre in the round in the United States and drew accolades from near and far.

Sandra and Allan were ardent adventurers.  They traveled the world and especially loved sailing.  In 1970, their lives were completely changed when they purchased a ranch in Grover, Utah.  They turned from California city-slickers to passionate Wayne County lovers.  Later years were happily spent between their winter home in Gilbert, AZ and their beloved ranch in glorious Grover, Utah.

In 1993 Allan and Sandra retired from their successful years at the theatre and embarked on 4 mission calls together for the LDS Church.  They were called as Public Relations specialists for Europe, they served under President and Sister Tad Callister in the Toronto mission, they served as Church Hosting missionaries and – because of their expertise – they were asked to be casting specialists for many films and commercials made by the Church.

Sandra was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  She served in many callings including Relief Society and Young Women’s President, teacher and humanitarian coordinator.  She loved being a visiting teacher and ministering sister to countless.

What is clear is that from the time Allan came home from his mission, he and his sweetheart, Sandy, were never apart.  They were shoulder to shoulder, heart to heart and soul to soul through their entire 69 year marriage.

On October 29, 2022, after a graceful battle with illness and surrounded by her beloved husband and children, Sandra was gently carried into heaven. Sandra had no guile, she had love for everyone and she and her precious, Allan held hands until the end.  Their’s was a glorious love story.

Sandra is survived by her husband, Allan Hugh Dietlein, daughter Shauna Orison (Randy), son Mark Allan (Sally), daughter Melody Palmer (Craig), son Timothy James and son David Hale (Corrin).  Also she is survived by brothers Phillip and Cody Hale and a sister Sherry Hale Brian.  She is preceded in death by her parents Nathan and Ruth Hudson Hale, a brother, Terry and two sisters, Sally Hale Rice and Tanya Radebaugh.  She loved all her family including her many Grand and Great Grandchildren.
