Riley Mitchell
Durst
Jul 11, 2005 — May 27, 2025
With heavy hearts, we mourn the unexpected passing of our beloved son, Riley Mitchell Durst.
Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, Riley lived a vibrant life filled with energy, curiosity, and an unwavering love for his family.
Riley was raised in the Draper and Bluffdale areas of Utah and spent a meaningful part of his youth in San Jose, California, where he discovered a passion for surfing. He was a student at Utah Valley University, pursuing a future that reflected his many interests and talents.
A dedicated gymnast for much of his childhood, Riley achieved numerous competitive successes and built lifelong friendships. He later shared his love for the sport as a coach at Pinnacle Gymnastics in Sandy, Utah, where he inspired and mentored young athletes with patience, encouragement, and infectious enthusiasm.
Riley’s adventurous spirit and intellectual curiosity were evident in every part of his life. He was passionate about video games, immersed himself in the intricacies of forex and stock trading, and constantly sought new challenges. As a youth, Riley was active in Scouting, cherishing his time at scout camps and the lasting memories made there.
Riley is deeply loved and will be profoundly missed by his family. He is survived by his parents, Bryan and Agnes Durst of Elk Ridge, Utah; his grandparents Jayne Nichols, James and MaryAnn Grimm, Diane Pattee, and Dana McCabe; his sister Lindsey and her children Lily, Ari, Evie, and Jameson; his brother William and his wife Harli, and their son Dominic. He is also lovingly remembered by his biological parents, Kendra Mitchell and Josh Mitchell, and his half-brother Zayden.
Riley will be remembered for his humor, courage, intelligence, and kind heart. As a devoted son, brother, uncle, coach, and friend, his impact on those around him is immeasurable, and his legacy of love and dedication will continue to shine brightly.
A celebration of Riley’s life will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Elk Ridge Stake Center, located at 185 Ridgeview Drive, Elk Ridge, UT 84651. Family and friends are invited to gather and honor the beautiful light Riley brought into their lives.
