Obituary

Our wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother, Marlene “Molly” Joyce Carter, 88, passed away on September 9, 2021, in Lindon, Utah.  She was born May 21, 1933, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Howard John Engh and Anna Fern Bush.  She grew up in Salt Lake City until her family moved to San Pedro, California, where she graduated from San Pedro High School.  She was elected Queen of Smiles, while in school, and this set a tone for her whole life.  She then moved to Provo, Utah, to attend Brigham Young University, where she met then married the love of her life, Wesley E. Carter, in the Salt Lake Utah Temple on April 24, 1952.  They have spent nearly 70 wonderful years together. They lived in the Edgemont neighborhood of Provo for most of those years, but have made Lindon their home since 1998.  Their favorite thing to do was to be together, in whatever they were doing.  You seldom saw one without the other.

Their lives were blessed with five children: Stephen (Chris) Carter, Craig (Sherrie) Carter, Scott (Julie) Carter, Marcie (Joe) Allphin, and Carl (Judy) Carter.  A son, Brent, was born in 1954, only living one day and we can only imagine the joy of their reunion.

Marlene added a spark to every occasion.  Her laughter and smile were infectious.  She loved her children and she was a wonderful mother, providing a happy home and many opportunities to serve and work together.  She was an amazing cook and her home was filled with glorious smells of food and a feeling of warmth and love.

Marlene was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she served in many callings, including Cub Scout Den Mother, where she held meetings in the small cabin on their property, much to the delight of her scouts.  She was the Young Women’s President and served in the Stake Primary.  Mostly, she served as a teacher in the Relief Society, where she taught hundreds of lessons over 50 years of service. She was known for giving a lesson with humor, humility and inclusion.

Marlene is survived by her husband, Wesley; her children, 18 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by her sisters: Colleen Stout of Orem, Utah, Norma Shelline of Mapleton, Utah; and her brother, Brian Engh of Herriman, Utah.  She is preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Fern Engh; and sisters, Nola Nelson and Lorraine Engh.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 18, 2021, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building at 56 East 600 North in Lindon, Utah, at 11:00 a.m.  There will be a visitation held from 9:45 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. prior to the funeral.  Interment will be at the Lindon City Cemetery.
