Louise Prestwich
Spendlove
Nov 8, 1938 — Dec 12, 2025
Our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Louise Prestwich Spendlove, 87, passed away peacefully with her children gathered in her home on Friday, December 12, 2025, in Mapleton, Utah.
Mom was born to Horace Emerson and Zipporah Varley Prestwich on November 8, 1938, in Provo, Utah. She was the tenth of eleven children. She was born into a family of three girls and six boys and would be blessed with a younger sister exactly three years later. She and all her siblings were born at home – the first nine with the help of her mother’s sister, a midwife, and the last two attended by a doctor.
She spent her growing up years in Provo, Utah. She attended Maeser Elementary School and was in the first graduating class from the new Provo High School in 1956.She was a social butterfly and relished those magical and nostalgic years of the 1940s and 1950s. To the very end of her life, she would often get together with her remaining “White Elephant” friends from her younger years.
After graduating from high school, Mom attended Brigham Young University where she met a tall, lanky “hick from the sticks” of Hurricane, Utah named George Paul Spendlove. They dated until Dad left for his mission to New Zealand in 1959. Three months after returning from his mission, Mom and Dad were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake City temple on August 31, 1961. The then-apostle Spencer W. Kimball performed their sealing ceremony.
Mom and Dad started their family and moved from Salt Lake City to dental school in San Francisco two years later. After dental school, Mom and Dad moved to southern California where Dad set up his practice. First in Granada Hills then, in 1971, moving to Santa Paula where Mom and Dad would raise seven children and where Mom would live until moving to Mapleton, now widowed, in 2019. Mom and Dad were married just over 55 years when Dad passed away from the effects of Parkinson’s Disease on September 28, 2016.
Mom was a devoted and loving wife and mother, then grandmother, then great- grandmother. She cheered the underdog. She defended her faith and was deeply patriotic. She loved America and the Fourth of July and Kenny Rogers. She loved Christmas and birds and elephants and beautiful things. She loved to bake pies, make bread with Dad, and Christmas candy for all her kids and grandkids each year. Her English toffee was second-to-none and she won blue ribbons in the county fair for her lemon meringue and blubarb pies. Her pie crusts were perfectly flaky and delicious. She was fun-loving, adventurous, and just a bit mischievous. She and Dad were blessed to travel to different parts of the world and she loved cruise ships – especially her girls-only getaways!
Mom was a remarkable example of strength, faith, and determination throughout her life. This was especially evident during the past year as she fought bravely to regain her health and, finally, when she placed her faith in God and exited this world with grace and courage.
She served her family all her life and left a great legacy of love and faith in her posterity. One of her greatest examples of love and strength and selfless determination was in caring for Dad whose Parkinson’s robbed him of life and vitality far too soon. Mom worked side by side with him in his dental practices until he was forced to retire because of the disease. Mom lovingly and tirelessly then cared for Dad at home as he declined until his passing. In all, Mom selflessly cared for Dad for the 22 years he suffered from the disease.
She was a faithful member and servant in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She and Dad raised all seven of her kids to be full-time missionaries, endowed and sealed in the House of the Lord. She loved to brag that all seven of her kids graduated from BYU! She served in many capacities in the Church but had an especially sweet and powerful impact on children – starting with her own – as a Primary teacher, leader, and chorister.
Her seven kids are now carrying on the work of her great legacy. Mom is survived by her children Scott and Kari Spendlove, Mapleton, Utah; Lisa and Dan Schuring, Mapleton, Utah; Steve Spendlove, Logan, Utah; Shawn and Brooke Spendlove, Chandler, Arizona; Sarah and Tom Caswell, Mapleton, Utah; Stuart and Kathy Spendlove, Springville, Utah; Rebecca and Scott Struve, Albuquerque, New Mexico; and 34 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters Shirlene (Ray) Martineau, Salt Lake City, Utah and Gloria (Lou) Rodda, Gig Harbor, Washington.
She was preceded in death by her husband Paul, her parents, eight of her siblings and their spouses, and many other family and friends. What a sweet reunion there was on the other side as she passed from this life to the next.
We wish to express our deepest gratitude to all the professional caregivers, medical staff, and the close family and neighbors whose compassion ensured our mother’s final months were comfortable and peaceful. There are simply too many to name, but we are truly, truly grateful for each of you.
