Larry Dean
Winger
Sep 22, 1943 — May 16, 2024
Husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, brother, cousin, and friend. Larry passed away on Thursday, May 16th, 2024 at the age of 80. He was born in Ashland, Ohio, on September 22, 1943. Larry was the son of the late Ivan Lawrence Winger and the late Eula Dudte Winger Newton, and little brother to the late David Winger. He was also husband to the late Sally Lynn Winger. He loved life on the farm and excelled in athletics. He graduated from Ashland High School with his sweetheart, Sally Lynn Stuart. Larry and Sally married in 1961, sealed in the Logan Utah Temple, then attended Utah State University. After he completed his degree in Education and Vocational Agricultural, Larry and Sally returned with their family back to Ohio and purchased his childhood farm.
Larry with his bride by his side created a legacy 60 years running. Dad, once a young sapling, with roots running deep, branched out to become a father to 9 daughters and 1 son. In time he became a grandfather to 44 grandchildren and 51 great grand-children. He rose to the challenge of providing for his large family wearing many hats through the years. His name synonymous with hard work, included: deputy sheriff, business owner, farming/gardening, teaching, coaching, mentoring youth, supporting the local FFA, hot oiling, independent sales, and managing church responsibilities to name a few. During his career he created life-long friendships. Life was an adventure. Dad brought the fun.
Too quickly, Dad found himself navigating retirement and empty nesting. In this new phase of life, Larry and Sally enjoyed genealogy and spending time in the temple. Dad shared his testimony as a living example of our Savior Jesus Christ through his works and deeds. The sacrifice of caring for a large family paid off. Epic was their joy as they watched grandchildren at numerous sporting events and activities. They were always eager to join their growing family camping in the canyons of Southeastern Utah, boating on Lake Powell, cruising the seas, touring the Midwest with its beautiful fall colors, exploring the Alaskan wilderness, relaxing on the beaches of Hawaii, sightseeing in Yellowstone, and participating in numerous family traditions.
Larry’s legacy, is full of love, laughter, and learning. Each of us strengthened by Dad’s teachings. He planted within us the ability to do hard things, to persevere, and a sure knowledge of a Father in Heaven who loves us. May we find comfort in Dad’s example as we continue forward, finding joy until we meet again.
