Obituary

Kenneth Duane Hendrix, beloved father, grandfather, and husband, passed away October 23, 2024, of complications resulting from early onset dementia and a fall.

Ken was born October 29, 1949 in Billings, Montana, as the oldest child of Keith and Dorothy Hendrix. He was raised on a cattle ranch in Melstone, Montana with his sister, younger brothers, and extended Kincheloe family. This is where his love of cows and rodeo began.

He graduated from Melstone High School in 1968. After high school, Ken was on the Rodeo Team both at Ricks College and BYU, where he graduated with a degree in Business. Ken served an LDS mission in Rapid City, South Dakota on a Sioux Reservation.

Ken married Barbara Jean Carlin on December 19, 1980 in the Oakland, California LDS temple. Barb, a teacher, shopper, and California girl, moved with her cowboy to tiny Roundup, Montana. There, they started their family of three girls, Whitney Louise, Katherine Ruth, and Megan Elise. The family moved from Twin Bridges, Montana, to Evanston, Wyoming, finally settling in Spanish Fork, Utah.

Ken worked in banking for many years, both as a loan officer and bank president, before using his love of agriculture to help ranchers buy and sell livestock. He was always heavily involved in his church callings, serving as both bishop and as a member of the stake presidency multiple times. His focus was often on the youth, whom he always welcomed into his home. He loved judging rodeos after he aged out of participating in them, cheering for his BYU Cougars and Denver Broncos, and spending time with his friends and family. He was a gregarious gatherer of people who never met a stranger.

After his wife Barb passed away, Ken married Janice Nielsen on September 15, 2012. Together they had many happy years of adventures and grandparenting their 32 grandchildren. Ken is survived by his wife, Janice, and three daughters, Whitney (Travis) Morris, Katie (Jeff) Staker, Megan (Chad) Huntsman – all of whom reside in Idaho Falls, Idaho – and 32 grandchildren, 12 of his, 20 of Janice’s, who all love and miss their Grandpa Ken. He’s also survived by his sister, Penee (HB) Arnett, Gene (Barbara) Hendrix, and Jeff Hendrix and many beloved nieces and nephew. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barb, his parents, and his in-laws.
