John Leroy
Caldwell
Mar 11, 1945 — Oct 8, 2025
Surrounded by his family, Roy Caldwell, 80, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2025, in Payson, Utah.
Roy was born on March 11, 1945, in Vernal, Utah, to Chellus and Electa Caldwell. He was the youngest of three very active brothers. Roy and his brothers excelled in many sports and extracurricular activities, especially while attending Uintah High School.
Roy served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Scotland, where he met people and a culture he deeply loved. During his service, Roy discovered his passion for teaching the gospel and studying the words of the Savior.
On June 19, 1967, Roy married Marilyn Pugh in the Salt Lake Temple. For 58 years, they built a loving marriage and an eternal family. Together, they have seven children, 32 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Roy graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah before going on to earn both a master’s and PhD from Brigham Young University. His love of learning was passed on to his children and grandchildren, whom he encouraged to seek as much education as possible.
Roy’s career focused on some of his greatest joys: flying, teaching, and sharing the gospel. He spent many fulfilling years in the U.S. Army, piloting helicopters, and airplanes at home and abroad. Roy had an unwavering love for his country and a profound commitment to defending freedom. His dedication to duty earned him several military awards and honors. Beyond his military service, Roy found particular joy in teaching Seminary, Institute, and Ancient Scripture at BYU. He had a deep knowledge of the scriptures and strived to live their teachings with conviction. His love of the gospel, the Savior, and his students was evident in all he did. Those who studied with him will remember his kindness, unwavering faith, and eagerness to serve.
Service was a hallmark of Roy’s life, and he found deep joy in fulfilling his church callings. Over the years, he faithfully served in a variety of roles, including temple ordinance worker, Stake Executive Secretary, High Counselor, and Bishop. His favorite callings were those that allowed him to teach and minister as the Savior would. He was a true disciple of Jesus Christ.
When his many responsibilities allowed, Roy loved spending time outdoors. He had a deep respect for nature, thanks to his many hunting, fishing, and camping trips with his father and brothers. He continued this tradition with his children and grandchildren, taking them backpacking, camping, fishing, hunting, and exploring as often as possible—even if it was just to find the best Christmas tree.
Roy’s passion extended to the Boy Scouts of America, where he served for over 30 years. As a young man, his embodiment of the BSA values helped him earn an Eagle Scout award. As an adult, Roy led in unit, district, and council positions; took scouts to the National Jamboree multiple times; and earned the Silver Beaver award. Roy was always prepared.
Roy’s greatest joy in life was his family. He cherished every moment with his beloved wife, with whom he enjoyed countless date nights, temple trips, and world travels. Roy took pride in supporting his children in all their activities and talents, capturing thousands of memories through video and photographs as they grew up. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his treasures. Roy generously expressed his love through kind words and bear hugs. One of his guiding mottos was “no empty chairs,” reflecting his desire for togetherness and his firm belief in eternal families.
Roy is survived by his wife, Marilyn; their children, Cherilee (Ryan) Sorensen, Marianne (Eric) Jenson, John (Jennifer) Caldwell, James (Shelby) Caldwell, Laurelyn Hansen, Juleah (Orion) Davidson, and Melynee (Robert) Clegg; his brother, Lee (Betsy) Caldwell; his sister-in-law, Joann Caldwell; 32 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Max Caldwell; his sisters-in-law, Bonnie Caldwell, Joyce Caldwell, and Susie Caldwell; and his son-in-law, Jeffrey Hansen.
The family wishes to sincerely thank all those who have given support, love, and kindness to our husband, father, and grandfather. Our special thanks go to Maple Dell Ward, Bristol Hospice, and the staff of Bennion Veterans Home for their exceptional service and care. We additionally thank the American Legion Honor Guard for their tribute.
