Joanne Holden
Spencer
Jun 29, 1945 — Jun 27, 2026
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, Joanne Spencer, who returned peacefully to her Heavenly Father on June 27, 2026, in Provo, Utah, just two days shy of her 81st birthday.
Alice Joanne Holden was born on June 29, 1945, in Tillamook, Oregon, to Simon Jay Holden and Alice Grace Bester. Named after her mother, she was known throughout her life by her middle name, Joanne. As the oldest of three sisters, Joanne grew up in a lively home filled with love—and just enough mischief. She often joked that her sister, Kathy, was the “mastermind” behind their childhood adventures, with sister, Jeannie, faithfully following along. These early years created a bond that lasted a lifetime. Joanne deeply felt the passing of Kathy just a year and a half before her own, often expressing how much she missed her dearest friend.
Joanne’s youth was filled with activity and connection. She participated in cheerleading, drill team, and Key Club, but her greatest joy came from friendships and simple adventures. She loved recalling carefree Sunday afternoons spent piling into a friend’s Model T and driving to the Oregon coast to enjoy the beauty of Seaside.
At the age of 16, Joanne and much of her family joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This decision became the cornerstone of her life. Her faith in Jesus Christ provided her with steady guidance, deep purpose, and enduring comfort, shaping her choices and strengthening her through both joyful and challenging times. She remained a devoted and faithful member throughout her life, quietly living the principles of service, kindness, and discipleship.
After graduating from Tillamook High School, Joanne married and moved to Dallas, Oregon, where she welcomed her first two children, Kristine (Kris) and Steven (Steve). Following her divorce, Joanne demonstrated remarkable strength and determination as she built a career at State Farm Insurance. Starting as an entry-level secretary, she earned multiple promotions through hard work and dedication, eventually serving as a claims manager.
In 1974, Joanne married the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Ronald Spencer, and together they built a beautiful life centered on faith and family. Joanne lovingly welcomed Bob’s son, Robert (Rob), and together they raised a growing and energetic household. In 1980, they returned to Tillamook, where they would remain for the next several decades and where five daughters—Kari, Kathryn (Kate), Rebecca (Becky), Jennifer (Jen), and Julie—completed their family.
Anyone who knew the Spencer family remembers the iconic big yellow van—often arriving at church or community events—and the seemingly endless line of children joyfully pouring out. It was just a small glimpse into the vibrant, bustling home Joanne created.
From 1980 to 1994, Joanne dedicated herself to raising her children while also running a home childcare business. It was not uncommon for there to be eight to ten additional children in her care at any given time. Her home was filled with laughter, learning, and what neighbors fondly remember as a “bicycle gang” traveling up and down the street—a testament to her energy, patience, and love for children.
In 1994, Joanne began working for the Tillamook County Emergency Management Department, where she served for 11 years. Drawing on principles of preparedness she valued in her faith, she contributed meaningfully to community readiness and played a role in the response and cleanup efforts following the devastating Tillamook flood of 1996. Even after her official retirement in 2015, Joanne couldn’t quite step away. Each winter, she returned to temporarily fill in for her successor, demonstrating her enduring dedication and love for the work.
Joanne’s heart remained in Tillamook—her cherished home of over 40 years. It was only due to illness that she and Bob relocated to Spanish Fork, Utah, in 2020, to be closer to family. She often said that leaving Tillamook was one of the hardest things she had ever done.
Joanne will be remembered for her unwavering faith, her tireless devotion to family, and her ability to find joy in life’s simple moments. She had a gift for connection and a gentle sense of humor that brought light to those around her. Her life was a steady and powerful example of Christlike love, sacrifice, and service.
Joanne’s devotion to the gospel extended beyond her home life. Alongside her husband, Bob, she had the cherished opportunity to serve an 18-month mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Iowa Des Moines Mission, specifically in Manchester, from August 2011 to February 2013. This period of service was a highlight of their later years, as they worked side by side, strengthening others and sharing their testimonies. Joanne found deep joy in missionary service and often spoke of the lasting relationships they formed.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Bob; her eight children—Rob (Gayle), Kris (Tim), Steve (Lynda), Kari (Kyle), Kate, Becky (Eric), Jen (Dave), and Julie (Travis); 20 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Her posterity stands as a living testament to the love and faith she cultivated throughout her life.
Her family finds peace in the knowledge that she has been reunited with loved ones who have gone before her and that through the Savior’s plan, families can be t
ogether forever.
“Therefore, O ye that embark in the service of God, see that ye serve him with all your heart, might, mind and strength…”
