Obituary

J Reed Hansen, 88, passed away March 8, 2021, at his home in Mapleton with family at his side.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Lois Wing Hansen.  He is survived by his children, Kathleen (Terry) Swapp, Peggy (Kevin) Madson, James Reed Hansen, Kelly (Tally) Hansen and Jill (Jason) Rucker.  He is also survived by his sister, Evelyn (Ralph) Fugate and his sister-in-law Lucille Lewis.  He has 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

He was born on November 5, 1932, in Palmyra, Utah to Finley Reed and Catherine Hansen.  J Reed attended schools in Spanish Fork and graduated from Spanish Fork High School.  On a dare, he attended the Gold and Green Ball in Mapleton where he met Lois, his true love.  They quickly became high school sweethearts and married for time and all eternity in the LDS Manti Temple on November 1, 1951.   He served in the Utah National Guard during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1952.

J Reed grew up helping on the family farm.  He began working at US Steel shortly after graduation as a sweeper and retired 44 years later as a foreman and millwright. With the assistance of his son-in-law, he built the family home and moved from Spanish Fork to Mapleton in 1979.

He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  He served in many callings, including young men’s president, counselor in the bishopric, stake high councilor, and bishop.  He loved to attend the temple and served as an ordinance worker in the Payson Temple.

J Reed loved to travel with his Lois.  They looked forward to yearly winter treks to Arizona with their close friends.  They enjoyed camping and riding ATVs until Lois’ passing.  J Reed missed Lois deeply and talked about her daily.

Following Lois’s death, he enjoyed serving at the Food and Care Coalition in Provo.
