Diana Jeanne Derr
Swan
Jul 10, 1945 — Oct 18, 2020
Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Diana Jeanne Derr Swan, passed away October 18, 2020, from complications of Covid-19, at Mountain View Hospital, Payson, Utah. Born July 10, 1945 in Brooklyn, New York to Harry and Jeannette Derr. She is now reunited with them and her one brother, Kenneth Derr.
Diana loved spending time with her extended family as she grew up in New York. She joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints with her family May 5, 1956. She later attended BYU where she met James Swan and they were married on May 7, 1965 in the Salt Lake Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah. She graduated in 1967 with a BS degree in Child Development and Family
Relations. This prepared her for the job she wanted and loved, a “stay-at-home- mom”. Jim and Diana lived in several states as they raised their family: Utah, Colorado, South Carolina, and Kansas. They lived most of the life in Great Bend, Kansas which they called home for 40 years.
She loved her children and spent much of her time caring and playing with her 4 children, Debbie, David, Jared and Ben. Being home at the crossroads was very important to her. Coming home to a snack and listening ear was the anchor for her family as she was eager to hear of their successes and encourage them. She actively participated in all that her children did, even music concerts. She was the first one to congratulate her seventh grader for winning the middle school’s Geography Bee. She loved to have long, deep conversations with her children to even talking about the latest sci-fi movie.
After all of her children were gone from the home, she worked as a math tutor through the Junior College in Great Bend, Kansas. She helped many understand the perplexities of math as they worked toward their GED. Volunteering at the school and PTA was commonplace in Diana’s life. She supported all of her children in all that they did: college, missions, weddings, marriage, grandchildren and life challenges.
Life seemed great and then came grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They were her joy! She loved spending time one on one getting to know each one of them. She loved the visits and celebrations with her family. Moving to Utah in 2017, was a blessing. Having most of her grandchildren nearby helped with the change and move. Whenever she could, she would snuggle with the sleeping little ones and soak it all in, especially those who knew her as Gigi. They loved her dearly and will miss her.
Diana held many different positions in her LDS wards. She was a seminary teacher for 12 years, home study and early-morning. She was also Primary President, Young Women President, and Relief Society President. She will long be remembered for her teaching ability of all ages. She also loved serving in the Family History Library helping others find their family names and preparing those names for the temple.
Everyone she knew will miss her captivating smile, lively conversations, and her ready-to-listen ear.
She is survived by her husband, James Swan of Parkway Health and Rehab, Payson, Utah, her children, Debra (Ron) Crockett of Mount Pleasant, Utah; David (Cathy) of Katy, Texas; Jared (Nolita) of Round Rock, Texas; and Benjamin (Carolyn) of Petersburg, New Jersey. She has 13 grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and two on the way.
She was preceded in death by her parents Harry and Jeannette Derr, her brother, Kenneth Derr, and one grandson, Paul Swan.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday, October 27 at 11:00 am at Walker Funeral Home, 587 South 100 West, Payson, Utah. Interment will be at the Payson Cemetery.
