Obituary

Our sweet mother, Alberta Deborah MacWelch Thompson, passed away on December 4th, 2022 at the age of 92. She was born on November 19, 1930 in Washington DC. Deborah was the 2nd child and only girl in a family of 6 children.  She took pride in being called a “tomboy” and always being able to keep up with her brothers. She grew up in rural Virginia, just outside of Washington DC.  She loved Virginia and would go back to visit family as often as possible.

Deborah met the love of her life, Owen, or as she called him, “Tommy”, while he was stationed at the Bethesda Navel Base Hospital in Maryland. They were married 9 weeks later on July 7th, 1950 in Washington D.C where they began their life together. They were later sealed for eternity in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Logan Temple.

Deborah enjoyed sewing, flowers and nature. In her final years, she especially took joy in watching birds that came into her yard. She loved sitting on her front porch, feeding and watching the birds in their birdbaths. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother who made her family the center of her life. She was a sweet, kind, gentle person who is dearly loved by her family and she will be deeply missed.

Deborah was proceeded in death by her husband – Owen Lamoine Thompson; her parents – John and Patty MacWelch; 4 brothers – Rawlings, Mike, Pete and Fred and her darling grandaughter – Kathryn. She is survived by her 5 children: Ken (Dianne) Thompson of Birdseye, UT, Jan Haire of Dalton, Georgia, Brent (Diane) Thompson of Spanish Fork, UT, Patricia (John) King of Palm Coast, Florida, and Jeanette Christensen of Orem, UT. Also surviving are 1 brother – Pat (Evelyn) MacWelch of Fairfax, VA and 1 sister-in-law, Sheila MacWelch of Kenbridge, VA.  She also left an amazing legacy of 13 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 2 great, great grandchildren.

Our family wishes to express our deep gratitude to the Elk Ridge Assisted Living Center for the care they gave our mother during the last 6 months of her life.  Their staff was kind and loving to both her and our family and we will always be grateful for their service to her.

In lieu of a funeral service, a private family memorial service will be held at a date and time yet to be determined. Interment will take place at a future date in Georgia.
