Dale Mattinson passed away peacefully on October 26, 2026, in Payson, Utah at the age of 93 years old.

Dale was born on February 24, 1933, in Payson, Utah to Dean Wilkins and Alice Francom Mattinson. Born during the Great Depression and growing up as the oldest sibling, Dale took on lots of responsibilities. Dale spent most of his childhood in Salem, Utah, growing up just above Salem pond. Dale often told stories of his time down at the pond, such as skating on the frozen water with his roller skates during the winter months.

Dale attended Spanish Fork High School but, just months before graduation, dropped out to serve as an Airplane Mechanic for the Air Force in the Korean War. He spent time in both Japan and Korea, working on planes and testing various weapons. Dale loved to tell stories about his service. After the war, Dale experimented with several different jobs, but settled working at Dugway Proving Ground as a Test Engineer, a career he kept for many years.

Dale can be described as a fighter. At age 50, Dale suffered a major heart attack and was not given much of a chance of survival. At around age 76, Dale was diagnosed with cancer, which he overcame. Over the last year and a half, Dale had continued his fight every single day. He was amazing at overcoming anything that stood in his way.

Dale can't be described fully without mentioning the love of his wife, Ida Banner. The two were married July 7, 1962 in Las Vegas, Nevada, and were later sealed for time and eternity on May 29, 2002 in the Mount Timpanogos Temple. Ida passed away December 3, 2015 from a short battle with cancer.

Throughout his life Dale enjoyed horse racing, camping, traveling with family and friends, fishing, and spending time in his vegetable garden. For several years, Dale was a member of the American Legion. He was also a member of the Spanish Fork Senior Citizens for many years, leading to close friendships that lasted the rest of his life.

Dale was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he held many callings such as being a temple worker at the Payson, Utah Temple in the Baptistry.

Dale is survived by his children Stacey (Brad) Loveland, Steven Mattinson, and Craig (Jodi) Mattinson; his sister Aleen "Nick" Newton; as well as three grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Dale is preceded in death by his parents, Dean Wilkins and Alice Francom Mattinson; his wife, Ida Banner; his siblings, Louise DeGraw (Terry), Tom (Carol), Nadine Michel (Larry), Jay, and brother-in-law: Lynn Newton.

We would like to thank the Bennion Veteran's Home for their amazing care, and loving staff this last year and a half. We would also like to thank Rosie Corona, his "adopted granddaughter" and dear friend for the love she showed him.

A visitation will be held in Dale's honor on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Walker Funeral Home, located at 187 South Main Street in Spanish Fork, Utah.

A graveside service will follow at 12:00 p.m. at Spanish Fork City Cemetery, located at 420 East 400 South in Spanish Fork, Utah.
