Obituary

Cynthia Lorraine Adams, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2025, leaving behind a beautiful legacy of love, generosity, and unwavering faith.

Born in Ndola, Zambia (formerly Northern Rhodesia), on December 6, 1935, to Laurence Louis de Grandhomme and Lily Petty, Cynthia was the youngest of seven children. Though she lost her father at just 16 years old, she carried his memory tenderly throughout her life.

A proud athlete in her youth, Cynthia played competitive softball for her club, the Wildcats, and even represented her country, then Northern Rhodesia, in fast-pitch softball.

On September 14, 1957, she married Ronald Vernon Adams. They were blessed with four children, including twin sons, and eventually made the life-changing decision to relocate from Zambia to South Africa, settling in East London.

Cynthia embraced the gospel of Jesus Christ and became a devoted, lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her faith became a guiding light in her life and in the lives of those she served.

She was a devoted mother to Lynette Annandale (Marius), Avril Harvey, Steven Adams (Sonya), Rory Adams (Charné), and a treasured Granny/Grammy to 38 adoring grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Cynthia’s hands were never idle. She served in many different callings, but one of her most noble traits, was her charitable nature. With a heart full of compassion, she gave freely to others—often quite willingly giving the clothes off her back. She found joy in sewing, woodcarving, and crafting—not for herself, but for those around her. Later in life, she also knitted, and everyone who wanted one, and many who never knew they wanted one, received a blanket knitted by her.

Many have been wrapped in the love of one of her handmade items, including dozens of beanies lovingly knitted with more than “a little help from a friend” and gifted to her great-grandchildren this past Christmas.

Even as her eyesight faded and arthritis crept into her hands, Cynthia remained devoted to giving. Just a month before her passing, she was still tying blankets to donate to those in need.

Her life was one of quiet strength, cheerful service, and selfless love. Cynthia’s legacy will live on in the hearts of her family and all who were touched by her kindness.

Hamba Kahle Mom.

By way of warning to all who knew Mom best. Her hearing and eyesight have returned, and the arthritis is gone, so her ability to grab a wooden spoon is back. Don’t say you weren’t warned.
