Obituary

If heaven needed a machinist, a mechanic, a scout leader, and a world-class grandkid spoiler all rolled into one, they just got their man.

Carwin Leroy Watts, born in Durango, Colorado, and raised in the dusty charm of Kirtland, New Mexico, left mortality on September 16, 2025, while in his happy place—doing what he loved, working on his car in his shop. Born to Joseph Leroy and Avarilla Bond Watts, Carwin was the kind of man who could fix anything—except maybe a broken heart, which he’s left behind in abundance.

He married the love of his life, Carol Anne DeHeer, on March 15, 1963, in the Manti Utah Temple, and together they built a legacy that spans generations and state lines. From Kirtland to Springville to Mapleton, Carwin’s life was a masterclass in hard work, devotion, and the fine art of tinkering.

A proud graduate of Kirtland Central High, BYU, and Utah Technical School, Carwin served in the U.S. Army Reserves and in the Lord’s army too—holding LDS callings from ward clerk to elder’s quorum president to scout leader. He also spent eight years as a temple worker, proving that even in retirement, he preferred sacred service over sitting still. Professionally, Carwin dedicated over 30 years to Geneva Steel, where his precision and work ethic earned the respect of all who knew him.

When not restoring classic cars or hunting for artifacts, Carwin could be found snowmobiling, boating, or building something ingenious in his shop—including playhouses for his grandchildren. His favorite projects, however, were the ones that involved family—especially the 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren who knew him as a master of treats, tricks, and unconditional love.

He is survived by his eternal co-pilot, Carol Anne, and their children: Michael (Jeanette), Richard (Raquel), Jennifer (Kyle), and Gregory Watts. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Joseph Watts, who we suspect greeted him with a hearty handshake and a well-oiled wrench. He is also preceded by his cherished great-granddaughter, Charley Mae Sagers—whom we’re certain Grandpa Watts will continue to spoil from above, with all the tenderness and mischief that only he could deliver.

Carwin’s life was a blueprint of faith, grit, and joy. He didn’t just live—he built, raced, laughed, and loved. And now, somewhere beyond the veil, he’s probably restoring a celestial hot rod and organizing a heavenly scout troop.

Drive on, Carwin. We’ll catch you at the finish line.
