Obituary

Our angel mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Beverly Young Zabriskie, passed from her mortality into her eternity at the sweet age of 94 ½ years on August 19, 2022. She died from a life well lived! She was surrounded by all those who love her, both here, and on the other side of the veil.

Beverly was born into the loving family of Gordon and Virginia Young on February 23, 1928. She came shortly after her big sister and best friend, Donna, and several years later would have a younger brother, Gordon, and a sweet sister, Kathy. She grew up in Salt Lake City and attended Whittier and Uintah schools where she made many lifetime friends.

When World War II broke out in 1941, Beverly and her sister did their part for the war effort by taking part in many USO shows where they sang for the troops. Even though they were only 13 and 14 years old, they felt they were very glamorous. They sang for many years together along with their sister, Kathy, joining them later, performing as a trio throughout the Wasatch Front.

Beverly attended East High School where she was in Girls Glee Club, A ‘Capella, and played the lead in many school musicals. She was also the President of East High Associated Girls (EHAG), was an attendant to the homecoming queen, and queen of the associated boys dance. Just before her high school graduation, the whole family contracted viral pneumonia, causing her to miss her own graduation.

When the war was winding down in 1945, Beverly started at the University of Utah where she joined the Tridelt Sorority, was Founder’s Day Queen, and her sister, Kathy, was born in 1946.

While still attending the University of Utah, she met, then married Leland Don Halvorsen. While they were engaged, she worked for the summer at Utah Parks Recreation, in Bryce Canyon, waitressing and cleaning cabins. After they married, they returned to the Parks system, working at the Grand Canyon performing in dinner shows.

Their first child, Michael Don Halvorsen was born February 24, 1949, and what a great birthday present he was.

Over the next seven years, Beverly lived in many different oil boom towns due to Don’s degree in geology. In 1955, they were transferred to Canada where, in December of 1956, Christie Lee Halvorsen was born. In February of 1960, the baby of the family, Lori Lynn was born. Beverly’s marriage to Don ended in 1965.

She met the love of her life, Bob R. Zabriskie, February 14, 1970, at a hockey game which was a blind date set up by her younger sister, Kathy, and brother-in-law, Ed. Bob and Beverly were married later that year, October 16, 1970, and were later sealed for time and all eternity September 4, 1974, in the Salt Lake Temple. They were together for many wonderful years traveling the world with the Tabernacle Choir and family, and they participated in the fine arts, creating a beautiful home. They enjoyed watching her family grow to six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Beverly lost her dear husband, Bob, on April 10, 2003. They were apart 19 years, until she joined him in their heavenly reunion.

An active life-long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Beverly had a strong testimony of her Savior Jesus Christ. She was a descendant of two prophets: her great-grandfather, Wilford Woodruff, and her great-great-grandfather, Brigham Young. She loved her pioneer heritage; it gave her the strength to face the trials she had throughout her life. She served in the Church as a Primary President, and also served two service missions: one at the Beehive House and another at the Church Office Building which encompassed the time period of the Salt Lake Winter Olympics.

Beverly held many wonderful jobs throughout her life, but her favorite was as the private secretary for a partner at the accounting firm of Deloitte, Haskins & Sells. At the age of 65, she retired from the workforce, but never lost the love for the people she worked with.

She was an amazing seamstress, making many Halloween costumes and dresses for her grandchildren. She loved to embroider, arrange flowers, decorate for all the holidays, and throw fantastic dinner parties. She was famous for her pink cookies, roast, potato salad, meatloaf, deviled eggs, and peach jello. She loved the fine arts including the symphony, Ballet West, Broadway plays, and especially supporting her husband, Bob, as the founder of the Salt Lake Opera Theatre. She had a beautiful soprano voice which she used many times to bless others.

Beverly is preceded in death by her loving husband, Bob R. Zabriskie; her parents, Gordon and Virginia Young; and her sister, Donna West. She is survived by her brother, Gordon W. Young; her sister, Kathy Bates; and her children: Mike Halvorsen, Christie Lee Butters, and Lara (Lori) Wells. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Amy, Spencer, Ashley, Bridger, Alexx, and Madie; as well as 14 great-grandchildren: Sam, Max, Gabe, Lukas, Paisley, Simon, Piers, Eulala, Dayne, Kendi, Tyson, Myles, Arya, and Rose.

We are saddened to lose Beverly from our lives on earth, but last week what started as the “worst day ever” became her “best day ever” as she returned home. And what a reunion it was!
