Obituary

We know her as mom, grandma, great-grandma, Aunt Betty, and good friend. Betty Jane Harris passed peacefully from mortality on Sunday, July 26, 2020. She was born January 31, 1932 in Torrance, California, the only child of Asa Crosthwaite Graham and Fannie Elizabeth Caldwell. After graduating from high school, she married Martin Harris on January 9, 1949 and was sealed in the Salt Lake Temple June 19, 1950. Together they raised 6 children, living in Southern California – primarily in Gardena, Torrance, and San Pedro. Through those years our home was a gathering place for many friends and family who were taught the gospel of Jesus Christ and nurtured when they needed a place of refuge. When dad retired, they lived in Idaho, Utah and back to California. After dad’s passing mom lived in California and Utah – her favorite place to live was Santa Maria. She loved the ocean and the central coast of California.

Mom worked in sales on and off throughout her life – she was successful with Jafra Cosmetics and real estate in California and Utah. She also taught real estate classes for several companies. Dad worked for TWA which began a life of travel for them. They traveled to many countries in Europe and South America, as well as many US states. Mom’s favorite place to visit was Hawaii and she loved to go on cruises, with Mexico and Alaska being her favorite.

Mom had a love for music and the theater; music was often played in our home including playing her autoharp. You could always find her directing music in a church meeting. She also loved to sing and had a beautiful alto voice –she sang in church choirs and barbershop harmony with Sweet Adelines. Mom was best known for her crocheting – she crocheted afghans for all her children and spouses, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and anyone else she thought could use one. Her last completed afghan is for a soon to be born great grandchild.

She is preceded in death by her husband Martin, son-in-law Brent Wheeler and great grandson David Anthony Steele. We know there has been a joyous reunion and she is free from the physical pains of mortality.  “Well done, thou good and faithful servant”

Betty is survived by her children: Brian Harris (Barbara), David Harris, Pamela Russo (Tony), Martha Wheeler, Craig Harris, and Carl Harris (Carrie). In addition to her 20 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren; there are many nieces, nephews, extended family, and good friends that love her. We will all miss her greatly. Thank you to those at Beehive House and 1 st Choice Home Health for their care and service to her.
