Allan John
Wrubell
Feb 8, 1943 — Aug 23, 2020
Allan John Wrubell was born February 8, 1943, in the rural town of Otthon, Saskatchewan, Canada. The oldest of five children, Allan grew up with younger sisters Doreen, Shirley and Jeanette, bookending them with a little brother, Ron. Theirs was a modest but happy home. His young life revolved around helping to maintain the family garden, working his paper route, and playing sports; baseball in the summer, and hockey in the winter. At 13 he contracted tuberculosis and was sent to a sanitorium three hours from home for 15 months. Demonstrating his lifelong love of good clean fun, he led his fellow patients on the boys’ ward in a rebellion of sorts against the nurses and the daily routine of being wheeled onto the balcony and given dozens of pills to swallow. Once the nurse handed out all their meds and left, they threw their pills over the balcony to the ground below. A few days went by before someone spotted all those colorful pills dotting the landscape.
Upon graduating from high school, he worked his way east, finally settling in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario to work in the computer department for the Algoma Steel Company. In those days, computers were larger than phone booths and needed their own rooms. It was in one of those rooms where he met and fell in love with Lois Catherine Primeau, a few years later. Their first home as newlyweds was in Sudbury, the so-called “Nickel Capital of the World.” One year and one baby boy later, Allan moved his young family to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, where his strong work ethic and engaging personality quickly found him promoted to purchasing agent for companies in the energy industry. Nine years later his family of five moved to Calgary, Alberta, where he headed up the purchasing department for Husky Oil. The foothills of the Rocky Mountains were a great place to raise a family. In time, son Greg was married and starting a family of his own in Utah; Catherine was married and living in Calgary; and Jason was in far-away Toronto. When an opportunity came in 1994 to head up the purchasing department for Thompson Creek Mine in Idaho, Allan and Lois thought it was an offer they couldn’t refuse. And they stayed for twelve years, until his retirement in 2007. After weighing their options, they chose to build their forever home in the lovely little town of Ephraim, Utah.
During their 53 years together, in every place they lived, they found out where the best fishing spots were, made wonderful, forever friends, and enjoyed their kids and later, grandkids every chance they got. And Lois worked on her landscape and home décor skills.
They also traveled a good deal; first through Allan’s profession, then as president of the Purchasing Management Association of Canada, and through his heavy involvement with the Boy Scouts. Together they visited every province, many of the states and a few foreign countries.
Life was good for Allan and Lois, and retirement was all it should be until a nagging neck problem became urgent. Two years and four surgeries later, Allan’s health deteriorated such that by the end of 2014, he suffered a serious heart attack. It was late December, the roads were bad, and it took too long to get him to the hospital in Provo. On the way there, he suffered a devastating stroke. These past five and half years were filled with hospitalizations, rehab, and therapy, a move to Payson, progress and setbacks, and painful decisions. Every step along their journey, Allan and Lois were strengthened and supported by loving family and friends, and most especially by leaning on the Lord. In the end, Allan’s epic struggle ran its course; he slipped away on August 23, 2020. Heavenly Father took his faithful son home.
Allan is survived by his loving and devoted wife Lois (Primeau); their children Greg (Tauna), Cathie (Lee), and Jason (Nina); their precious grandchildren Jocelyn, Caitlan, Emily, Megan, Regan and Afton; and great-grandchildren Saige, Jane, Abe and Gavin.
Allan was predeceased by his father John Ignatz Wrubell, his mother Angeline Mary Napora, and his sister Jeanette.
